I bought this old English handbell on Ebay from a seller in the USA. J Shaw & Son was a Musical Bell Founder in Bradford in Yorkshire, England. Lovely colour.
This bell was made by my maternal great, great grandfather John Shaw and his son Walter. My mother will be thrilled to see this picture! She has often spoken of her grandfather Walter Shaw being a bell founder in Bradford. My brother lives in the New Forest and my mother, who is very elderly now, sometimes stays with him. It would give her enormous pleasure to see this bell, to have it in her hands for a short while. Is there any remote chance this would be possible? Vicky (vickystew@hotmail.com)
Vicky, I have now sold this bell and do not have a record of who has it now. I would have gladly sent it to you to borrow. I now maintain my collection at a constant number, so when I add bells, some have to go.
This bell was made in my maternal GGG Grandfather's foundry. John Shaw's son was Walter, my GG Grandfather. My mother will be thrilled to see this picture! She has often spoken of her grandfather Walter Shaw being a bell founder in Bradford.
Enjoy! I am now sticking firmly to my resolution not to buy another bell without being willing to remove one from my collection. I have rarely been tempted - perhaps because I don’t look too hard.
During early life I was known as Fido - so I use that as my internet identity where I can. I am a retired Local Government man who now enjoys a variety of interests. In these blogs I hope to share some of them with anyone with a shared sense of humour who may come across them. But they are mainly for my own interest as a reminder of some of the things I have done in my retirement.
This is one of them.

Oh, what a shame! Our family would have bought it from you, never mind. Should another come you way please let me know.
I'm sorry I've only just published these posts, I must ensure I receive emails about posts again.
I've just discovered that J Shaw is James (not John) as I posted earlier. I'm finding out more about him, its fascinating.
Research is fun, isn't it?
I just bought of these bells here in Hampshire, but I think mine is a “D” handbell by J.Shaw, & Son Co of Bradford.
Enjoy! I am now sticking firmly to my resolution not to buy another bell without being willing to remove one from my collection. I have rarely been tempted - perhaps because I don’t look too hard.
